Our Commitment
Green Lab is committed to gender equality, inclusion and respectful working practices across all areas of its work. This Gender Equality Plan is a formal public document approved by Green Lab and published on the Green Lab website. It applies across Green Lab’s UK and international operations, including research, design, education, incubation, fieldwork, events, partnerships, community activities and living lab programmes. Green Lab aims to ensure that people of all genders have equal opportunity to participate, contribute, lead and benefit from its work. Green Lab recognises that gender equality is essential to responsible research, innovation, design, education and climate action.
Responsibility and Resources
Green Lab, as the legal entity responsible for its operations, owns this Gender Equality Plan and is responsible for its implementation, monitoring and review. Green Lab will ensure that gender equality is considered in relevant projects, partnerships, recruitment, events, training, programmes and organisational practices.
Green Lab will allocate appropriate organisational time, responsibility and expertise to support implementation of this plan. Where appropriate, external expertise may be used to strengthen Green Lab’s approach to gender equality, safeguarding, inclusion and responsible practice.
Training and Awareness
Green Lab will promote awareness of gender equality, unconscious bias, inclusive working practices and prevention of harassment. Training and awareness-raising will be provided where appropriate, particularly for people involved in recruitment, project management, mentoring, education, events, safeguarding and leadership roles.
Key Areas of Action
Work-Life Balance and Organisational Culture
Green Lab will support respectful, flexible and inclusive working practices. Green Lab will consider caring responsibilities, accessibility, fieldwork, travel, international collaboration and different working patterns when planning meetings, events, programmes and project activities.
Gender Balance in Leadership and Decision-Making
Green Lab will seek balanced and inclusive representation in leadership roles, project teams, advisory groups, panels, mentors, trainers, speakers and decision-making processes. Green Lab will encourage participation and leadership from women and people of underrepresented gender groups across its activities.
Recruitment, Selection and Progression
Green Lab will use fair, transparent and inclusive processes for recruitment, collaboration, residencies, incubator participation, mentoring and professional development opportunities. Green Lab will use inclusive language in opportunities and avoid gender bias in selection, assessment and decision-making.
Gender in Research, Innovation and Education
Where relevant, Green Lab will consider gender and inclusion in the design, delivery and evaluation of research, innovation, climate education, food systems, biomaterials, circular economy, regenerative design and community projects. This includes considering who participates, who benefits, whose needs are represented and whether project outcomes may affect people differently based on gender or intersecting factors.
Prevention of Harassment and Gender-Based Violence
Green Lab has zero tolerance for sexual harassment, gender-based violence, bullying, discrimination, victimisation or abuse of power. This applies to all Green Lab workplaces, field sites, labs, farms, incubator spaces, events, workshops, residencies, online spaces, travel and project activities. Concerns will be treated seriously, sensitively and confidentially. Green Lab will take appropriate action where required and will protect people who raise concerns in good faith from retaliation.
Reporting Concerns
Anyone involved in Green Lab activities may raise a concern about discrimination, harassment, bullying, safeguarding or inappropriate conduct. Concerns should be reported through Green Lab’s published contact route or other appropriate organisational communication channels. Contact: hello@greenlab.org
Review and Approval
This Gender Equality Plan will be reviewed annually and updated as needed.
